2007 Scholarship Program Announcement
Today, the James Monroe Foundation announced that the 2007 James Monroe Scholarship Award program would be suspended due to budgetary considerations.
At its quarterly meeting, JMF members resolved to devote every available monetary resource in the upcoming fiscal year to the Birthplace reconstruction effort in Westmoreland County.
In the second of its 99 year lease, the Foundation in cooperation with the College of William & Mary recently completed an archeological survey of the Monroe farm property.
The Foundation hopes to open the restored Monroe birthplace in 2008.
"Currently, the project demands our complete attention," said Scholarship Chairman Chris Winslow, "but we will resume the scholarship program as soon as possible."
Plans call for the scholarship program to be reinstated as early as next year.

The 2004-2005 topic asked college-bound high school juniors and seniors to consider "Man of the World: James Monroe, Diplomat & President."
The Foundation implemented the Scholarship program in January of 2000 as part of its continued efforts to honor the life and legacy of the fifth President. Trustees of the Foundation resolved to tell the Monroe story in a larger way through education and preservation programs.
Founded in 1927 by President Monroe's great-great grandson, Laurence Gouveneur Hoes and his mother Rose Gouveneur Hoes (who also established the First Ladies Gown Collection at the Smithsonian), the foundation has since been the Founder, donor and continuing supporter of the James Monroe Law Office Museum and Memorial Library at 908 Charles Street in Fredericksburg.
The Foundation continues to pursue its education and preservation goals. This week, President Bill Thomas signed a long term lease with Westmoreland County to build a replica of 5th President's birthplace.

Scholarship Program Begins Today
In its effort to increase interest in the James Monroe Scholarship Award, James Monroe.Org releases its topic for the 2004-2005 competition today--four months before the start of previous competitions. It is "Man of the World: James Monroe, Diplomat and President."
Arielle Kuiper Named Vice Chairwoman of Web Acquisitions
JamesMonroe.Org is pleased to welcome Arielle Kuiper on board as Vice Chairwoman of Web Acquisitions. She is a Monroe Scholar, a two-time judge of the James Monroe Scholarship Award and currently attends the College of William and Mary, pursuing her undergraduate degree.
Ms. Kuiper's appointment is pursuant to our new initiative to make JamesMonroe.Org the premier Monroe-related research website of the world-wide web. We encourage students of Monroe, including participants in the James Monroe Scholarship Award writing competition, to use the information provided on our research page in their projects.
New Resources Soon Unveiled:
"The Life and Character of James Monroe"
the eulogy deliverd by John Quincy Adams
"Notice of Mr. Adam's Eulogium on the
Life and Character of James Monroe"
a criticism of the eulogy delivered
by John Quincy Adams, 1832
The James Monroe Foundation, in its effort to expand its online research sources, today announces its newest available resource for students of James Monroe. John Quincy Adams's eulogy on "The Life and Character of James Monroe" provides great detail regarding many of the contributions made by the fifth president throughout his lifetime. Whether it was the Revolutionary War, the ministry in Paris, or tenure as Governor of Virginia, James Monroe's service knew no boundaries. The "Notice of Mr. Adam's Eulogium on the Life and Character of James Monroe" provides criticism of several assertions made by President Adams by an unknown author in 1832.
"We're very excited at the prospect of expanding our online resources," said Scholarship Chairman Chris Winslow. "This will assist further students in their Monroe research."
2004 Scholarship Program Underway
In January 2001, at its Twenty-first Century Strategic Planning Conference at the College of William & Mary (funded in part from a grant from the Jessie Ball DuPont Fund) the trustees of the James Monroe Foundation resolved to tell the Monroe story in a larger way through education and preservation programs in the years to come. Now in its fourth year since introduction, the Monroe Scholarship Award continues our commitment to celebrate James Monroe's life, work and legacy.
