The following rules have been adopted for the 2005-2006 James Monroe Scholarship Award. Participants should read and follow each rule closely as entries that do not meet certain criteria below risk disqualification.

  • 1. The papers should be reflective, demonstrating hard work, sound judgment, and sensitivity to the complexities of the subject’s issues.

  • 2. The papers should contain very few errors, none of which serves to undermine the effectiveness of the paper for well-informed readers.

  • 3. All submissions must be original work.

  • 4. The applying student must be a junior or senior in a public, private or home-school high school program.

  • 5. The applicant must be a resident of the United States of America.

  • 6. The first page of the paper should include the following information: first and last name, title of paper, grade, name of high school, state, phone number, address, and e-mail address.

  • 7. The paper may or may not be an assigned part of a formal class or registered home school assignment. The scholarship flyer can be downloaded here.

  • 8. The paper must be between 1250-1500 words in length.

  • 9. The paper must be appropriately documented with a) either footnotes or endnotes and b) a bibliography.

  • 10. In accordance with our sponsor, any student under 18 must have their parent or guardian print, sign and return the James Monroe Foundation Consent Form.

  • 11. The paper must be submitted via e-mail as an MS Word attachment to: Scholarship@MonroeFoundation.org

  • 12. All questions regarding the competition should be directed via e-mail to: Scholarship@MonroeFoundation.org

  • 13. By participating in the writing competition, the student consents to the publishing of his/her submission online should it be chosen as a winning selection.

  • 14. All decisions made by the judges are final.
