The James Monroe Foundation is proud to present JamesMonroe.Org, home of the James Monroe Scholarship Award. Established in 2001 at the Foundation's 21st Century Planning Conference held in Williamsburg, Virginia, the James Monroe Scholarship Award is an annual essay contest for juniors and seniors enrolled in a public, private or home-school high school program.

The Award serves the Foundation's mission to preserve and honor the life, character, ideals, works and memory of the fifth President of the United States of America through a variety of means; educate the public regarding the continued relevance of the Monroe Doctrine of 1823, the most fundamental principle of American diplomacy which declared that foreign European powers and ideologies should be prevented from spreading their influence in the western hemisphere; create a living memorial for President Monroe which shall have both a physical manifestation and also shall be an active and influential voice of advocacy for sound American diplomacy and governmental values.

Previous winners have gone on to attend Princeton, Yale, UVA, William & Mary, James Madison, Virginia Tech and other fine schools across the nation where they continue their studies as proud Monroe Scholars.
